Craven College Embark on Supported Internship Programme
Three students from Craven College are set to start supported internships within the catering industry this year. It will be the first year the College have offered the scheme to students and are hoping it will be a success.
Supported internships are aimed at young people aged 16-24 with special educational needs (SEN) or an Education, Health and Care plan, many of whom find it difficult to get a job or suitable support throughout employment. Supported internships provide a personalised study programme, along with support from course tutors and job coaches, to help students gain valuable skills, training and experience in the workplace as well as qualifications. Lasting for at least 6 months, they aim to then enable students to secure paid employment.
Speaking about the benefits the scheme will bring, Chloe Narey, a student from Bradford said “It’s good to get support as we don’t usually get the help we need. It’s nice that people are caring and putting effort into us. I’m hoping to get a job and GCSE out of it. It’s also good because it gives us more time to work, because we can sometimes be slower. They understand us.”
James Waite, from Bingley, said “I’m hoping it will give me a better understanding of employment in the catering industry and the different aspects, not just of being a chef, but also a waiter. I think it will be a big part of my journey into the future.”
Chloe Ousey from Keighley is also “hoping for a bright future”.
Course tutor, Richard Newall said “I’m really excited about this. These three are the trailblazers, so if it goes well hopefully it will be a year on year thing. It supports them getting a job and qualifications. It’s an exciting initiative and I’m really excited to be a part of it.”
