Canine Behaviour Assessments for Animal Studies

Published 11 April

Animal Management Level 3 students recently spent a morning designing and carrying out canine behaviour assessments.

The assessments were carried out on Walter, a Weimaraner, and Hank, a German Shorthaired Pointer. Both are HPR dogs which means they are bred to hunt, point and retrieve game, and are extremely active working dogs.

The students enjoyed a chilly morning in the cross country field where they could observe the behaviour of Walter and Hank and even carried out some basic training with the help of some tubes of squeezy cheese.

Danielle Fox, Animal Studies tutor, and owner of Walter and Hank said: “On what was a very cold morning, everybody thoroughly enjoyed getting out of the classroom. This created a very pleasant learning environment and the dogs were great!”
