The Aviation Instructor role is responsible for progression of learners through supporting with attendance, attainment and work placements within the Aviation Academy.  The role will support students through their programme to ensure success in line with Awarding Organisations requirements.

Key Duties

To work with the Head of Department and manage and co-ordinate a series of interventions for learners as directed by the Head of Department. The focus will be on ensuring that the programmes meet the needs of students and other stakeholders and that students receive an excellent experience whilst ensuring quality and recruitment targets are met.

Main Responsibilities


To be responsible for planning and management of the performance of the assigned programmes.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Teach employability skills to a range of levels, abilities and career aspirations 
  • Complete student reviews in line with college requirements 
  • Monitor student attendance and complete early interventions with parents
  • Attend parents’ information evenings and meetings 
  • Liaise with parents on student progression
  • Working with the Work Experience Team in co-ordinating and implementing student industry placements / work experience / experience of work 
  • Leading on student engagement through development and implementation of student enrichment and curriculum enhancement activities
  • Liaising with the Programmes Leaders for Maths and English to ensure that students are meeting the conditions of funding
  • Monitoring and providing programme data as required 
  • Implementing student surveys and forums, ensuring student satisfaction benchmarks are met each year
  • Embedding and promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity across the programmes
  • Involved in appropriate quality assurance and quality improvement activities across the programmes, working with the Head of Department
  • Support leaders on and completing self-assessment procedures and quality improvement plans for specific programmes (HE and/or FE)
  • Managing the guidance, selection, admission and progression / destination of students and dealing with matters relating to their performance, attendance, achievement, conduct and discipline
  • Checking and submitting student registrations and exam entries
  • Setting up and monitoring courses through Pro-monitor including course set up, assessment strategies and target grades
  • Monitoring and being responsible for timely completion of student tracking and progress through Markbook 
  • Involved in programme team and course committee meetings 
  • Being an active participant in cross-department, and cross- college meetings as required 
  • Assisting with the induction, mentoring and support of new and existing staff on the assigned programmes in line with college procedures as required
  • Supporting classes during sickness cover
  • Invigilate exams 
  • To support the Head of Department in the planning, innovation, design and development of curriculum programmes and cross College marketing activities

The person we are hoping to appoint will meet all the following essential requirements and some or all of the desirable requirements.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in Aviation and Travel
  • Level 3 qualification or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant subject area
  • Qualified to Level 2 (GCSE Grade A*-C or equivalent) in English and maths (or willing to work towards completion within a specified time frame)
  • Good administrative skills with the ability to maintain accurate and relevant records in line with quality procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and experience of having difficult conversations
  • Interest and understanding of current educational initiatives
  • Ability to work flexibly and on own initiative to meet the needs of the Department and College
  • Ability to motivate staff and work effectively as a team member

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS 

  • Level 5 qualification or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant subject area
  • Current teaching qualification to Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training/PGCE/Cert Ed (or working towards)
  • Experience of course tutorship
  • Experience of FE programmes
  • Knowledge of current initiatives in Aviation and Travel spheres
  • Experience of IV/IQA planning and assessment
