Please note Foundation Degrees are qualifications in their own right and students progressing from a Foundation Degree to a top-up year are subject to a new fee.


The Prosthetic Make-up Effects FD will prepare you for a successful career as a Multi-Media Make-Up Artist, providing you with the opportunity to develop your creativity and individual style whilst building techniques and skills. You will investigate and develop the necessary practical and theoretical skills to become a make-up artist as well as developing technical, application and professional skills alongside conceptual initiatives.

Our tutors have excellent industry links and experience which has enabled this course to be written in liaison with industry leaders from the fields of film, television and theatre production. In particular, you will benefit from their expertise and knowledge of the latest technology, materials and techniques, skills and knowledge that are crucial to becoming a successful make-up artist. You will gain valuable industry experience throughout the course with key speakers including Kate Benton and Shauna Harrison and the expert team from Pam, London.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, presentations and tutorials, which will be supported through group discussion, presentations, workshops and individual and group tasks. Alongside the contact hours, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours of independent study such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research and preparing for assessments. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus, in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. The average class size for this course is 8-10.

A Foundation Degree is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is equal to the first two years of a full BA or BSc (Hons) course and a Higher National Diploma. Once you complete your Prosthetic Make-up Effects FD, you can move on to study the Make-up Artistry BA (Hons) for a further year.

Full-time students will study six x 20 credit modules for the first year and two x 20 credit modules with two x 40 credit modules in the second year. Part-time students will study four x 20 credit modules each year.

Entry Requirements

  • 48 UCAS tariff points (formerly 120 UCAS points)
  • English & Maths GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent


Students without necessary qualifications but with relevant work experience are encouraged to apply for an interview.

In addition, if you have a relevant HNC you may be able to transfer credit in certain modules onto the Foundation Degree.
