The Hospitality Business Management FD is a challenging vocational course which will equip you with the managerial tools to adapt to an ever-changing business environment, as well as giving you an in-depth knowledge of the hospitality sector. This course is based on current trends and developments within this dynamic and expanding service sector industry and enables you to develop knowledge and practical experience both in the classroom and in work-based environments. You will be exposed to the most up-to-date and wide-ranging industry practice, linked to your own workplace or area of interest. Skipton is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Dales’ and as a busy tourist destination, there are many opportunities to work in or own a small-medium sized business in the hospitality industry.  The tutors have a wide range of backgrounds and industry contacts who were consulted for the course design, content and assessment. Their contacts also provide an excellent source of guest speakers and industry visits to enhance your professional knowledge.

You will be given the opportunity to participate in work-related learning including planning and organising your own themed nights and events. You also have the opportunity to build a portfolio of additional vocational / professional qualifications such as Food Hygiene, Health and Safety at Work and Personal Licence Holders.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, role plays and presentations, which will be supported through group discussion, presentations by external expert practitioners, individual and group tasks, guided reading and research, tutorials, reports and research projects to analyse and evaluate success or failure and practical assessments of events.

Alongside the contact hours, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours (pro-rata for part time study) of independent study each week such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research and preparing for assessments. You will also receive an individual tutorial session each semester. Your independent study is supported by the excellent Learning Hub at the Aireville Campus in addition to the College’s Specialist Support Centre. Some of the modules are shared with other courses within the business suite, allowing students to share experience and best practice across a wide range of businesses.  The average class size for this course is 8-10 students.

The Foundation Degree is a nationally recognised qualification in its own right and is equal to the first two years of a full BA or BSc (Hons) course. Once you complete your FD, you may then move on to study the Business Management in the Service Sector BA (Hons).

Entry Requirements

  • 48 UCAS tariff points (formerly 120 UCAS points)
  • English & Maths GCSEs grade 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent


Students without necessary qualifications but with relevant work experience are encouraged to apply for an interview.

In addition, if you have a relevant HNC you may be able to transfer credit in certain modules onto the Foundation Degree.
