Animal Husbandry & Welfare BSc (Top-up)
This superb new course builds on the knowledge gained during Level 5 study. The BSc will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of animal management and will equip you with the necessary knowledge to assess the welfare needs of animals, enable you to acquire practical animal management skills and devise welfare management strategies pertinent to the animal sector.
The state-of-the-art Animal Management Centre enhances the high-quality provision for Animal Management students, providing bespoke facilities for a wide variety of species, enabling you to further develop your animal management skills required for industry. A graduate in Animal Husbandry & Welfare will be able to undertake academic research and solve problems specific to the industry.

- 240 credits from Animal Husbandry & Welfare FdSc or other Level 5 qualification in a relevant subject area
What you will study
- Environmental Education, Communication & Engagement will equip you with the skills to deliver effective environmental education, communication and engagement activities in a professional and safe manner. Assessed by an essay and educational activity portfolio (20 credits)
- Animal Welfare & Accommodation will allow you to develop in-depth knowledge of animal welfare standards and application to types of accommodation and design and is assessed by an animal transportation and enclosure design and a report (20 credits)
- Advanced Rehabilitation & Therapy will encourage you to critically evaluate factors that predispose an animal to a performance/health-related injury, and how recovery can be supported to promote repair. Assessed by a scientific report and essay (20 credits)
- Professional Practice in the Animal Industry enables you to explore your career journey and reflect on the decisions that led to embarking on studying for a career within the animal industry. Assessed by a presentation and professional development plan (20 credits)
- Dissertation provides you with the opportunity to analyse in-depth, a current or emerging issue in the sector of interest. Assessed by an academic poster presentation and dissertation report (40 credits)
You will receive feedback on your formal assessments within four working weeks of the submission date. You must receive a pass mark of 40 or above in all modules to achieve the BSc (Hons) Degree. How you will study...
Teaching and learning will be face-to-face and will take place through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, activities and opportunities to undertake your own research. Your learning will be supported by group and individual tutorial sessions.
You will have the opportunity to take part in external visits to businesses involved in animal husbandry and welfare. These visits may be optional but may involve extra costs.
Alongside course time in College, you will be expected to undertake 10-12 hours of independent study each week, such as reading journal articles and books, undertaking research from academic and technical texts and preparing for assessments, presentations or examinations. Your independent study is supported by Microsoft Teams, our online electronic resource platform. All lesson resources are available online and we have a fantastic Learning Hub with Specialist Study Support. Average class sizes for HE courses are usually between 6 and 15 students.
