This is a highly competitive industry to enter and you’ll need as many skills and as much experience as possible to have the advantage over other candidates and gain employment within this field.
Our tutors have extensive experience in public and uniformed services providing you with the best possible education. The college has strong links with the services, including the Royal Marines, Army, the Metropolitan Police Service, North and West Yorkshire Police Service and North and West Yorkshire Fire Service. You will be coached to reach the required standard of physical fitness to increase your chances in the highly competitive entry system for the services. Above all, you will find out from the services themselves about the attitudes and aptitudes that they expect.
Students have the opportunity to go on residential trips including ski trips and this year students will be going on a one week Travel Adventure study trip to Cyprus where they will visit the UN, a virtual training army base, police academy, fire and anti-terrorist division.
Craven College students have progressed into employment in the Police, Fire and Paramedic Services, Customs and Revenue, the Royal Marines and the Army. One exstudent progressed to study at Leeds Met University and will this year be going to the base camp of Mount Everest.
You will have the opportunity to try out for one of the college’s many Sports Development Centres and to take advantage of the opportunities offered through our Wellness and FESCo initiatives.
You will be encouraged to produce a Craven College Record of Employability, Skills and Training folder (CREST). This will detail all aspects of your work at college and your work experience and is an ideal way of promoting your skills to an employer at an interview.
Based on the college’s proven successful track record in public services training, we have been chosen as a partner in this new scheme. The Army works in partnership with the college to support courses prior to joining the Army. If you are accepted onto the scheme and successfully complete your course you will receive a bursary of £2000.
This scheme is aimed at students across curriculum areas, not solely public services. For example students in Construction, Animal Care, Media, ICT and Catering are all in demand for careers in the Army. For more information on the Army Bursary contact Student Services on 01756 708 008.
We have a Look at Life scheme with the Royal Marines and Royal Navy and will be sending students to Commando Training Centre and Portsmouth for a week at a time.
