Full-Time Courses : Outdoor Activities

The Outdoor Activity Industry has many facets and can lead to many different work opportunities. At Craven College we offer several different options for young people looking for a career in the Outdoor sector. You can choose to study at either level 2 or 3 in Adventure Tourism or Outdoor Adventure.

All these options are unique programmes delivered by The Centre for Travel and Tourism Studies and the Sport and Outdoor Activities Division to ensure students have the vital skillset from both specialist areas. Many successful students from these courses go on to study our Foundation Degree in Outdoor and Adventurous Activities.

Opportunities available within the Adventure Tourism industry

Activity and adventure is the biggest growth area in tourism with 400,000 outbound passengers last year, 50% of which were handled by tour operators. Participation is predicted to grow by 70% over the next 3 years.

Adventure tourism usually takes place in off-the-beaten track areas, with some degree of physical activity e.g. mountain biking in the Utah deserts, trekking to Everest base camp or white-water rafting in New Zealand. The industry needs professionals both to organise the holidays and lead the activities. The aim of these courses is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work in this exciting area of the tourism industry. These courses are specifically designed for young people with an interest in finding employment in this area.

Opportunities available within the Outdoor Adventure industry

Within the UK and abroad the outdoor industry has a large range of providers; from holiday activity companies through to individual businesses providing a range of outdoor and adventurous experiences.  The development of this sector over the last few years has led to leaps in professional standards and consequently the skills required.

Outdoor Adventure involves working at advanced levels to instruct, lead and organise adventurous activities both in the UK and abroad.

The aim of these courses is to develop theoretical and practical skills which will directly lead to a level of competence within outdoor practice that is highly rated within the sector. Traditionally students with Outdoor Adventure qualifications progress into well-respected and rewarding work. This particular course is highly regarded nationally and is a bench-mark for other providers. Many of the staff team were involved in writing the current course units for Edexcel.
