What will I study?

This two year course will introduce you to the performing arts industry, giving you practical experience of the production process along with performance techniques, from classical to contemporary. You will explore a variety of plays, genres and the work of practitioners, as wel as performing in a range of productions.

You will have the opportunity to take additional qualifications in Set Design and Construction.


How is the course taught?

This is a practical, work-related course delivered by tutors and working professionals from the performing arts industry.  You will learn by completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.


What are the entry requirements?

  • Four GCSEs grade A* to C including English Language.
  • Level 2 Diploma (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject at merit or distinction.
  • Interview and audition.

Where will it take me?

  • Foundation Degree in Performance at Craven College.
  • Degree level Study at other colleges and universities  - previous students have progressed to the Central School of Speech and Drama, The Poor School, Rose Bruford, Middlesex University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds.
  • Employment working as actors and entertainers, arts administrators and running performance arts businesses

Student success story

Emily Walton successfully completed a National Diploma in Performing Arts going on to study for a BA(Hons) in Acting at Leeds University.

Having successfully completed her National Diploma in Performing Arts, Sophie Leach went on to study Stage Set Design and Construction at The Central School of Speech and Drama, London.


Equipment & resources used

As well as studying and performing in a purpose built theatre and studios you will also have a chance to meet and work with outside professionals from the industry. The college also has its own radio station which students are encouraged to use and gain experience in the skills of acting and performing on radio.


How will I be assessed?

Assessment is ongoing and based mostly on your practical ability in workshops, rehearsals and performance based work.  It is also based on theoretical assignments, which require independent study and research.  You will need to meet given deadlines and successfully complete each unit, after which you will receive formal written feedback, together with an interim grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction.  Grades can be improved within given timescales.
