Apprenticeships : Equine Studies

Working within the Equine industry is hard work and takes dedication and a passion for horses. This Apprenticeship will offer you the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience whilst working towards a recognised qualification in horse care.

What will I study?

You need a strong understanding of horses and must have good communication and customer care skills, which will be developed through the Apprenticeship. Our Apprentices work in various disciplines; in riding schools, competition centres, studs, equitation training and breeding.

How long does the course last?

Course duration is between 12-24 months depending upon level and experience.

Course Content

NVQ /Diploma Level 2 Equine Studies units include:

  • Care of Horses
  • Health & Safety
  • Monitoring Health
  • Watering and Feeding

NVQ/Diploma 3 Horse Care units include:

  • Advanced Feeding
  • Exercising Horses
  • Health & Safety
  • Yard Management
  • Intermediate/Advanced Certificate in Horse Care BHEST

Additional Study

  • Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • Some Apprentices will carry out Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

How will I be assessed?

An assessor will visit the workplace regularly to assess your competence and help you to build a portfolio of evidence. College attendance will be required and arranged at a time to best meet the needs of the employer

Entry Requirements

  • Employment within the industry
  • GCSE grade A-D Mathematics & English desirable

Career Progression

  • Higher Education such as a Foundation degree
  • Management qualification
  • Progression within the industry
