Naturally you’ll need a love of horses to work in the equine industry and you’ll need to be an early riser – a lot of the work that needs doing with horses happens first thing in the morning.
You need a strong understanding of horses and must have good communication and customer care skills, which will be developed through the Apprenticeship.
Apprentices work in various disciplines, in riding schools, with racehorse trainers, as an instructor or with breeders.
Course duration is between 14-20 months depending upon level and age.

An assessor will visit the workplace regularly to assess your competence and to help you build a portfolio of evidence. College attendance will be required.
A friend of Katie’s who works at Craven College recommended the Apprenticeship route to her. Already employed in the equine industry; studying the NVQ Level Two fit in well with Katie’s work in different stables. Her tutor visits her in the workplace, watches her use her skills and asks questions about the jobs and responsibilities she has, she is also there to help Katie by answering any queries she has.
As well as building up her equine business and knowledge now, Katie wants to own her own yard and teach others how to ride.
The course is the first step towards fulfilling her future ambition.
“The College staff are really nice and helpful when they visit me in the workplace. I am able to have questions answered and have found studying for my NVQ a very positive experience. When I finish Level Two I am hoping to continue with NVQ Level Three or go on to do a different Equine qualification.”
