The horticulture industry offers many opportunities from growing and potting seeds, to designing and creating landscape projects, travelling in search of rare and unusual plants, creating a nature reserve in a back garden or designing and maintaining an 18 hole golf course.
Horticulture is ideal for those who like working outdoors, usually as part of a small team. You could be working for a large organisation or a council doing grounds maintenance or working for a smaller company building and maintaining planting schemes and paths, fences and patios in domestic gardens.
It has the appeal of being varied, seldom long in the same location and providing you with a good understanding of grounds development and maintenance.
Course duration is 12-18 months depending upon level and age.

An assessor will visit you in the workplace regularly to assess your competence and help you to build a portfolio of evidence. Horticulture Apprentices are required to attend a day release course where on-going assessments take place.
I left Oakbank sixth form with AS Level Leisure, Recreation and PE after deciding not to continue on to A2 Levels. I worked part-time at Hardacre Landscapes based in Keighley and enjoyed my role there and I wanted to expand on this and earn some money.
I spoke to some really helpful tutors at Craven College and decided that an Apprenticeship would be a great way for me to gain a qualification relevant to my job and still gave me the opportunity to earn money.
My work means I go out and meet lots of different people. I study at College one day a week and my assessor comes out to visit me at work once a month.
My ambition is to end up managing the business at Hardacres and hopefully my Apprenticeship will set me well on the way to doing so!
