Apprenticeships : Care of the Elderly

Apprenticeships in this area can be hugely rewarding and would suit those with a caring nature and ability to reassure and safeguard.

What will I study?

An Apprentice working in health and social care will assist senior care workers and social workers to provide care services in nursing or residential homes and also out in the community, maybe in the NHS or private health organisations or care homes. You will work in a customer facing role and will need to develop excellent customer service skills. Working as an Apprentice means you can put your skills into practice as you learn.

How long does the course last?

Course duration is 14 – 24 months depending upon level, age and experience.

Course Content

NVQ/Diploma Level 2 Care of the Elderly units include:

  • Communication
  • Duty of Care
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Optional/additional units specific to area
  • Personal Development

NVQ/Diploma Level 3 Care of the Elderly units include:

  • Developing Own Practices
  • Promoting Effective Communication
  • Promoting Well-being & Protection
  • Promoting, Monitoring & Maintaining Health & Environment

Additional Study

  • Candidates will work towards Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • Complete Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Some Apprentices will complete Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in the workplace and at college, each candidate will build a portfolio of evidence which will be internally and externally assessed.

Entry Requirements

  • Employment/Work placement in industry
  • GCSE grade C in English & Mathematics is desirable

Career Progression

  • Specialising in: Care of the Elderly,Mental Health, Residential Care or Social Work
