The horticulture industry offers many opportunities from planting, growing, potting and cultivating plants, to designing, creating and maintaining soft and hard landscaping. Horticulture is ideal for those who like working outdoors, usually as part of a small team.

The horticulture industry offers many opportunities from planting, growing, potting and cultivating plants, to designing, creating and maintaining soft and hard landscaping. Horticulture is ideal for those who like working outdoors, usually as part of a small team. You could be working for a large organisation or a council doing grounds maintenance or working for a smaller company maintaining planting schemes and building paths, fences and patios in domestic gardens. It has the appeal of being varied, seldom long in the same location and providing you with a good understanding of grounds development and maintenance.

What will I study?

Establishing Plants or Seeds in Soil, Identifying the Health & Maintaining the Condition of General Amenity Turf, Preparing Ground for Seeding & Planting, Preparing & Transporting Plants & Resources, Using & Maintaining Pedestrian Controlled Powered Equipment.

How long does the course last?

Course duration is 14-18 months.

Emergency First Aid and one occupationalqualification relevant to your workplace

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a mixture of skill tests, examinations, assignments and exercises at college. An assessor may visit you in the work place over the period of your training to assess your practical competencies.

  • Employment/Work Placement in industry
  • 3 GCSE grade A* - C

Career Progression

  • Progression to Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Progression to another Level 3 qualification
